2015 Rockin' One Red - 90pts.

"Identical in it cèpage to the winery's Rockin' Ted bottling of the same vintage but afforded a slightly shorter stay in barrel, this well-made wine is the marginally more fruity and a tad less spicy of the two. It, too, is a fairly full-bodied wine with plenty of plummy richness, and, while fully ripe, it is nicely balanced with fine-grained tannins lending just the right degree of firmness. A few years of cellaring will certainly not hurt, it is ready to go and is sure to make tasty drinking with flavorful braised beef or lamb dishes without waiting another day."

2016 Rockin' One Blanc - 90points
Green-hued gold. Pear nectar, melon, white peach and a hint of orange zest on the deeply perfumed nose. Fleshy and open-knit but energetic as well, offering plush pit and orchard fruit and honey flavors that are given a spicy edge by a suggestion of candied ginger. Finishes long and smooth, with a sneaky floral note and repeating peachiness.

2017 Viognier - 91 points
Light, bright yellow. Honeydew melon, peach nectar and a hint of tangerine on the highly perfumed nose. Silky and seamless in texture, offering vibrant pit and citrus fruit flavors that deepen steadily on the back half while maintaining urgency. A sexy floral note emerges on the finish, which lingers with impressive focus and persistence. In the context of New World Viognier this wine is a solid value.

2016 Grenache -  90 points
Bright ruby-red. Ripe dark fruits, vanilla and pungent floral aromas are given urgency by a spicy overtone. Silky and expansive in the mouth, offering open-knit, oak-spiced raspberry and cherry flavors that tighten up slowly on the back half. In a seamless, approachable style, finishing smooth and spicy, with soft tannins framing the wine's exuberant fruit.

2016 Mourvedre - 90 points
Vivid purple. Deeply pitched aromas of ripe black and blue fruits are sharpened by a peppery element and a suave floral note. Fleshy and seamless on the palate, offering lush blueberry and cherry liqueur flavors and a touch of candied licorice. In a warm, forward, somewhat decadent style, with supple tannins coming in late to contribute shape and grip.

2015 Rockin One Red  - 91 points
Opaque ruby. Ripe cherry, blackberry, olive and cracked pepper on the nose, with a hint of candied licorice emerging as the wine opens up. Appealingly sweet and open-knit, showing very good depth to its black and blue fruit and floral pastille flavors. A smoky nuance comes up on the finish, which features velvety tannins and a hint of smokiness. I'd have guessed that there is quite a bit more Syrah here.

Deep brilliant ruby. Powerful dark fruit liqueur, incense and vanilla aromas are complicated by suggestions of cola, pipe tobacco and woodsmoke. Spicy, expansive black currant, bitter cherry and fruitcake flavors put on weight while maintaining urgency. A sexy floral accent gains strength with air and carries through the strikingly long, focused finish, which shows excellent clarity and smooth, slow-building tannins.

Chewy and sharply focused on the palate, showing excellent clarity and spicy cut to the sappy blackberry and bitter cherry flavors. Brilliant violet. Seductively perfumed aromas of dark berry preserves, olive and candied violet, joined by a slowly emerging smoky mineral note. Deep-pitched blueberry, bitter cherry and fruitcake flavors are energized by a jolt of cracked pepper. Weighty but also quite lively on the mineral-tinged finish, which shows excellent clarity and harmonious tannins that sneak in late.

2016 Rockin' One: 91pts

Opaque ruby. Pungent, smoke-tinged blue fruit, floral and succulent herb aromas take on a spicy quality as the wine opens up. Sweet cherry liqueur, boysenberry and violet pastille flavors show very good depth as well as energy. The spicy note reappears on an impressively long, gently tannic finish that strongly echoes the floral note.

2015 Grenache - 92 points
Pale ruby-purple colored, the 2015 Grenache Geneseo District has a gorgeous fragrance of red roses, lavender and Bing cherries with touches of spice box and dusty earth. Medium-bodied, soft, elegant and seductive in its expressive poise, it delivers lovely perfumed red fruit and a good long, spicy finish. 1,200 cases produced.

2015 Rockin' Ted - 91 points
A sun-kissed blend of 39% Mourvèdre, 31% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Petite Sirah, the 2015 Rockin' Ted offers up aromas of sweet cherries, dried herbs and marmalade. On the palate, it's full-bodied, ample and open-knit, with velvety tannins and a generous core of baked fruit flavors. I'd like to see a bit more energy, but it's my favorite of these reds from Cass Winery.

2014 Rockin' One Red - 91 points
A blend of 42% Grenache, 37% Mourvèdre, 16% Syrah and 5% Petite Sirah, the 2014 Rockin’ One Estate Cuvée Geneseo District has a very pretty potpourri and kirsch-scented nose with hints of baking spices, underbrush and garrigue. Medium to full-bodied, soft, satiny and a with refreshing acid line lifting the spicy red berry preserves flavors, it finishes with persistent earth and peppery notes. 550 cases produced.

40% Roussanne; 33% Viognier; 27% Marsanne. As good as the Cass Marsanne and Roussanne might be, neither achieves the same degree of fruity richness and range exhibited by this expressive blend. While it is again geared to full ripeness much like its mates, it is fragrant and floral with a great sense of energy and a wealth of deep, mildly honeyed, melon and peach fruit, and it is surprisingly well-balanced and light on its feet for the very substantial wine that it is.

  • Cass has been focusing on Bordeaux reds in Paso Robles; their Cab Franc has been very good, and this Cabernet Sauvignon is better. It shows its warm origins in very ripe fruit flavors of blackberries, currants and chocolate, but the structure is enlivened with fine acidity and rich, dusty tannins. Delicious and dry, it shows an elegance that makes it irresistible. -Steve Heimoff
