Conoisseur's Guide to California Wine

  • 2014 Rockin' One Blanc - 90 points

40% Roussanne; 33% Viognier; 27% Marsanne. As good as the Cass Marsanne and Roussanne might be, neither achieves the same degree of fruity richness and range exhibited by this expressive blend. While it is again geared to full ripeness much like its mates, it is fragrant and floral with a great sense of energy and a wealth of deep, mildly honeyed, melon and peach fruit, and it is surprisingly well-balanced and light on its feet for the very substantial wine that it is.

Glass-staining ruby. Blackberry, cola, violet and woodsmoke on the perfumed nose. Fleshy, palate-coating dark berry flavors pick up cracked pepper and floral pastille qualities with airy. Finishes smoky and very long, with pliant tannins adding shape to the wine's lush dark, clinging fruit.

  • 2012 Rockin' One Red - 90 points

Bright violet color. Deeply pitched but lucid black and blue fruit scents are complemented by suggestions of pipe tobacco, olive and black pepper. Weighty and broad in the mouth, offering plush boysenberry and candied plum flavors lifted by juicy acidity. A smoky note comes up on the finish, which is framed by smooth, slowly building tannins.

  • 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon - 91 points

Opaque ruby. Heady aromas of dark berries, smoky minerals and incense are lifted by a suggestion of black pepper. Sweet, dense and seamless on entry, then tighter in the mid-palate, with juicy acidity giving focus to the sweet plum jam and blueberry flavors. A smoky note builds in the glass and carries through a long, juicy finish that's framed by smooth, slow-building tannins. This suave wine is surprisingly approachable but clearly has the material for aging.

  • 2012 Reserve - 92 points

Inky ruby. An exotically perfumed bouquet evokes ripe cherry, blackcurrant, incense and vanilla, with a smoky mineral nuance adding vivacity. Stains the palate with intense dark berry preserve and licorice flavors, with mocha and vanilla notes adding sweetness. Smoothly blends power and vivacity and finishes very long and sappy, with velvety tannins coming up to add shape and grip.

  • Richness and opulence characterize this white Rhône blend of Roussanne and Marsanne, which is easily Cass’s best ever. It’s delicous in vanilla cream-accented Mandarin orange and honey flavors, with a tang of minerality. The alcohol is high, yet the wine maintains exquisite balance and poise. - Steve Heimoff

Wine Enthusiast Magazine

  • 90 points - 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Cass has been focusing on Bordeaux reds in Paso Robles; their Cab Franc has been very good, and this Cabernet Sauvignon is better. It shows its warm origins in very ripe fruit flavors of blackberries, currants and chocolate, but the structure is enlivened with fine acidity and rich, dusty tannins. Delicious and dry, it shows an elegance that makes it irresistible. -Steve Heimoff

  • Deep red. Impressively complex bouquet evokes red and dark berries, musky herbs and flowers and tobacco. Smells remarkably like a southern Rhone wine, and tastes like one, too. • 90 points - 2005 Syrah
  • Saturated ruby color. Exotically perfumed aromas of cherry-cola, Asian spices and vanilla; the oak is pretty strong but so is the fruit. Broad, sweet raspberry and candied cherry flavors are firmed by fine-grained tannins, which seem to soften with air. Pliant, seductive and intriguingly pinot-like, with excellent finishing lift and clarity. This is delicious right now. -Josh Raynolds

  • (70% cabernet sauvignon, 15% cabernet franc, 10% merlot, 3% malbec and 2% petit verdot): Inky ruby. Brooding, pungent aromas of cherry pit, cassis and licorice, with smoke and espresso accents. Deeply pitched dark fruit flavors show surprising vivacity and pick up spiciness with air. Chewy tannins build on the very long, smoky, licorice-accented finish. This is still a baby.

Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

  • 90 Points - 2010 Roussanne
  • Light, bright gold. Peach and melon on the nose, with hints of lemon zest and white flowers; smells a lot like viognier. Fleshy, appealingly juicy pit fruit flavors gain sweetness with air, picking up notes of poached pear and floral honey. A fruity, seductive rendition of this variety that finishes with very good energy and cut. This would be great with southeast Asian dishes.
